Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson all had successful solo careers in 1996, when they gathered to record a tribute to Canadian songwriter Willie P. Bennett. But it quickly became clear that the album that emerged – High or Hurtin': The Songs of Willie P. Bennett – was no one-off recording, and the band name taken from a Bennett record was to become a staple of Canadian roots-rock. With twenty years, eight albums, several JUNO nominations and one JUNO Award, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remain one of Canada’s great musical treasures.

The band’s show at Massey Hall comes in the wake of the October, 2016 Kings and Kings. Following 2011’s Kings and Queens, for which the trio sought contributions from a range of female artists (including Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Serena Ryder and Rosanne Cash), the latest album taps the talents of the band’s male counterparts including Dallas Green (City and Colour), Nick Lowe, Bruce Cockburn, Vince Gill, Keb Mo and others.
