Massey Hall presents
Over the course of 10 albums, Danny Michel has built a devoted fanbase through his special mix of alt-country, rock, folk and pop. His new offering, the wonderful Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me, builds on that eclecticism and swerves into world music territory with the help of The Benque Players. Formed by a stellar group of Belizean musicians that Michel met while in Central America (where he spends a great deal of his time), the group employs turtle shells, donkey jawbones and Garifuna drums to create a rich, tropical sound.
Toronto-born multi-instrumentalist Quique Escamilla has come a long way from his birthplace of Chiapas, Mexico, but the music of his homeland remains close at hand—and close to his heart. Though he has been featured regularly on CBC radio shows Here and Now, Metro Morning and Fresh Air, there’s no equivalent to catching his fusion of contemporary and traditional styles—everything from bolero to jazz—live.
