Massey Hall presents
Esperanza Spalding vaulted into the mainstream when she snagged the 2011 Grammy for Best New Artist—the first time a jazz musician had ever won in that category. (“New” may have been a bit of a misnomer, however—the bassist, vocalist and composer had been performing since the age of five.) Spalding’s latest release, Radio Music Society, sees jazz musicians such as Joe Lovano, Jack DeJohnette and Billy Hart predominantly exploring pop songs.
